For this challenging tunneling assignment, Kleinberg Electric undertook the creation and completion of a five-mile tunnel along Manhattan’s 10th Avenue; a segment of the New York City Water Tunnel #3. It was the largest capital construction project in state history with a total cost estimate of $6 billion over a 50-year time frame. Kleinberg’s scope of work was vast, including digging nine 700-foot-deep shafts, installing a 13.8 KV substation to power up the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), and the installation of multiple 3000 Amp low-tension services for construction support of the various shafts. The assignment was completed over the course of 72 months, and was performed for Schiavone, Frontier-Kemper, Shea, JV.
